Spring 2003

Dear Colleague

Welcome to the first Kolbus UK Email Newsletter.
This newsletter is published with the objective of keeping you up to date with changes and developments to both the Kolbus range of equipment and other companies we represent.
The big news for this issue is that Kolbus UK have become the representatives for CMC in our sector of the graphic arts market. As you will see from the articles, CMC manufacture inserting, wrapping and mailing lines as well as bundle shrink wrappers and cartoning machines. This equipment complements the Kolbus and Sigloch ranges and will enable Kolbus UK to offer turn-key solutions for all our lines:- shrinkwrappers for Ratio binder lines, inserters and mailers for Publica high speed lines and cartoning machines for cased book lines - or combinations of each.
My colleagues and I have been impressed with both the quality and technical edge to the CMC kit and the positive "can do" attitude to problem solving from the company in Italy. If you have a problem in this area give us a call and we may have the solution.

The new HD 142 trimmer is also highlighted together with further improvements to the DA 270 Casemaker and the ZU 840 Gatherer.

We will be distributing this email newsletter on a regular basis and will be inviting to you to sign up for it very shortly. In the meantime, if there is anything you would like to see featured in upcoming issues, please give us a call.

CMC Machinery Ltd

Kolbus UK will be selling the CMC Range of inserters, mailing lines and shrink wrappers in the UK and Ireland. This new agency agreement formalises the ongoing association between Kolbus and the Italian Manufacturer CMC Machinery Ltd.

The CMC machine range is not unknown in the UK, agencies have been selling to mailing houses and newspapers for some time with around 200 machines already installed here. This arrangement will continue with Kolbus UK concentrating on their existing markets of magazines, books and catalogues. After sales support and technical backup will be provided by Kolbus UK, with direct links back to the Italian factory for parts and training.

The CMC range has features and flexibility not available on comparable machines, making them of particular interest to binderies and finishing houses. The range of machinery is designed to run either linked to binding equipment or used as standalone machines.

New Kolbus Trimmer - HD142

The Kolbus HD 142 three knife trimmer replaces the existing HD 140P - more user friendly and with touch screen operation. One of the most notable differences is the conversion to touch screen monitor. Also incorporated into the basic specification will be speed synchronisation with the BF for higher output speeds - up to 65 cycles/hr - together with optical speed indication for in-line production. Now to be supplied as standard are a large format attachment (up to 300 x 420mm trimmed size) and a delivery extension to improve operation safety. Protection hoods over the infeed belt can now be opened and height adjustment of the accelerating roll can be effected during production.

The new Kolbus HD 142 is more powerful and robust with adjustment motors uprated from 24v to 36v and spindles now trapezoid threaded. The Co-Pilot system has been further developed (now based on Windows 2000) so speed and ease of operation are improved. Finally, product quality is improved by the change to four-point alignment on the cutting table.

New Blockfeeder for the Kolbus ZU 840 Gatherer

The Kolbus ZU 840 Gatherer is further enhanced with a Blockfeeder now available. This new feeder will accommodate thread sewn and/or pre-glued book blocks with a thickness range from 3mm up to 15mm and a maximum stack height in the magazine of 150mm. As with other material the suction belt, which is an integral part of the magazine, bends down the bottom book block to separate that section from the stack and transport it without friction from the magazine.

Improved operator training

Operator training has been further improved with the opening of the Sigloch Book Competence and Training Centre, Blaufelden, Germany. Under the expert guidance of Ralf Lux, an experienced bookbinder, operators can undertake both theoretical and practical training in hard cover binding, folding, gathering and book block processing.

Alternatively Ralf Lux can be contracted to undertake training at customer's own plants. This scheme covers all Sigloch equipment and Kolbus book production machines in the BF and FE ranges.

CMC 2500 Film Wrapping Line

For the magazine printer especially, the CMC 2500 is an ideal shrink wrapping machine. Capable of a maximum speed of 15,000 copies per hour it is perfectly matched to the Publica binder. By being able to cope with selective mailings, card or gimmick gluing and pick-and-place it also offers an in-line fulfilment facility.

The CMC 2500 is a very flexible machine, the feeders for example are of a single universal design so can be used for inserting sheets or booklets within a magazine or adding items to the top. There is no maximum number of feeders either, and they can be placed very close together to accept a wider range of product sizes. Amongst the selective feeding methods there is even an autoloader for a CD hopper - or machines can be
customised for almost any special formats.

In the event of a mis-feed or jam the CMC "gap recovery system" operates to keep production running. Because the wrapping section uniquely uses a separate motor it continues to finish earlier products and then copes with the product gap when it arrives, so maximising productivity. The inbuilt reject system is situated before the wrapping tunnel so film is saved on rejected copies and time saved in unwrapping.

DA270 Casemaker even easier to operate

Now arguably the world's best selling casemaker has been developed so that it is even easier to operate and with speed up to 65 cycles a minute it complements the existing casemaking range. Operators particularly appreciate the ergonomically designed feeder stations, now much lower and contributing to the overall higher output levels.
Output is further improved with make-ready time dramatically reduced to under five minutes. Apart from the matrix, all adjustments are motorised so there are no parts to change and the adjustment axes can be altered whilst the machine is in operation.

The Kolbus DA 270 now features a similar cloth feeder to the ZU 840 Gatherer enabling it to feed practically any material. Inside lining with cold glue is now available and the DA 270 can also be fitted with an integrated board cutter.

People Profile -
Ray Rowswell

Your first point of call when contacting Kolbus UK for spare parts will now be Ray Rowswell.
Ray has joined Kolbus UK to expand the existing parts and customer service department in Milton Keynes. Although new to working for the company Ray has been familiar with Kolbus pretty well all his working life - buying parts from Schuler Sales and Service when he was in the bindery at BPC Hazell some 20 years ago.

Ray's greatest claim to fame however has been playing guitar in his spare time, particularly in the early 80s when he played with various local rock bands. If you happen to have an album by The Stowaways in your record collection then you will have an example of his musical skills. "There's nothing I'd like more than to dust down the old guitar and play again" says Ray - so as they say "watch this space".
