Spring 2004

Robert Flather, M.D. Kolbus UK Ltd

Welcome
to the Spring edition of the Kolbus UK Newsletter focussing on our new products at DRUPA.

Kolbus are presenting a completely new look to their machine range and everything on display on the stand is a new development.

The highlight of the stand will be a collaboration project with Ferag which we have been told will revolutionise magazine binding. At this stage no further details are available other than that the machine will be in full production on the stand!

Kolbus also introduce a new Cased Book line suitable for low volume producers and new entrants to the market. Based on proven Compact technology this machine will offer an economic alternative to the faster Compact 60.

The Ratiobinder and its associated Gatherer and Trimmer are all updated with design improvements and more sophisticated co-pilot technology.

There has been a lot of talk about CIP4 and a lot of questions as to whether it will ever actually happen. Kolbus are introducing 3*60, an open architecture networking system which will enable Kolbus machines to be integrated into MIS systems along with many other benefits.

Sigloch introduce two new machines, an update on their small Back Lining machine to link in with the new Kolbus Casing In machine and their first Perfect Binder - a 4300cph machine based on the Ratiobinder.

Meccanotecnica introduce a Backlining machine called the Gludo to integrate with an Aster Sewer.

Alf Hall, Trevor Thomas and I are all at DRUPA for the whole show and look forward to welcoming you on the Kolbus stand where the usual hospitality will be available. If you can’t make it to the stand then I’m sure you may well find us in the Altstadt at the Irish Bar!

 The New KM 473 Ratiobinder

Brand New Ratiobinder

The Kolbus KM 473 Ratiobinder replaces the existing KM 472.

Available with 27 or 34 clamps the new modular design also brings improved ergonomics and increased automation. The size range is enlarged, with 320mm being the new maximum width, ideal for A4 landscape products. It can also now take products up to 70mm in thickness.

The Kolbus KM 473 has a new infeed design and gripper carriage delivery. Remote diagnosis is now possible and the new touch screen monitors of the Co-Pilot control system are even more operator friendly.

Three knife trimmer updated

HD 152 Three Knife Trimmer

With their three knife trimmer, the HD151, Kolbus had a problem — how to improve the acknowledged best in its class?

Well, the best just got better — the new HD 152 has improved counter stacker speed range and a remote diagnosis server.

New cased book line

Kolbus introduce a brand new entry level Cased book line — the Kolbus BF511.
Standing for classic, original, uncompromising book production, it operates at 30 cyc/min and is ideal for the digital market and low volume producers.

Book forming and pressing is an integral part of the machine with direct transfer from casing-in to the FE station. Gluing, head and tail banding, and rounding and backing stations are standard on the BF511.

The ergonomic design makes the machine particularly operator friendly and saves bindery space with its compact footprint.

Despite a budget price it is built to the same exacting engineering standards as the faster 60 per minute Compact, with the same format range. The BF511 does not compromise quality.

All the Kolbus range benefit from the new Co-Pilot 2 system, giving the operator even more control via touch screens.

New from Sigloch
Sigloch have introduced a new backlining machine, the BBL 30/2.

Designed to link with any 30 cycles/min line it is particularly suited to the new Kolbus BF 511 book line and Kolbus HD 130 trimmer. With twoshot gluing fitted as standard the BBL 30/2 is a very versatile machine.

The networked bindery

Without trying to re-invent the wheel, and with a solid background of support for CIP3, CIP4 and JDF, Kolbus will be demonstrating their own software communication system — the Kolbus 3*60.

Whilst perfectly good MIS solutions already exist to take care of order processing, management and commercial aspects, Kolbus 3*60 takes job and machine management a stage further. The name signifies a full 360 degree openness, based on POP3/SMTP email protocol. It means that Kolbus 3*60 can exchange information and commands with all systems, which can also send and receive emails.

So, order management and production machines are interlinked. An electronic job folder manages jobs from quotations through production planning, production calendar, machine status, fault analysis and evaluation, right through to packing slips.

Kolbus 3*60 networks older machines and those from other manufacturers. Any authorised person can access the data in real time within the factory or from any internet connection worldwide. Coupling to JDF or JMF based networks is facilitated at the server controlling and managing the internal network, utilising translation software.

Brand new binder from Sigloch

Sigloch KB4300 A first for Sigloch — and to debut at DRUPA on the Kolbus stand  is an entry level perfect binder, the KB4300. Running at 4,300 cycles/hour and based on the Kolbus Ratiobinder, this heavy duty 17 clamp machine is ideal for the cost-conscious buyer. It has a particularly compact footprint and can be used in conjunction with the Sigloch ZTM 7043 gatherer.
