Summer 2003

Robert Flather, M.D. Kolbus UK Ltd
Welcome . . . . . .
to the summer edition of the Kolbus UK Newsletter.

In this issue we feature the new Kolbus 12,000 per hour KM 410B binder.
This is the long clamp version of the Publica binder and is suitable for two-up paperback and cased book block production, as well as oversize products.

Our new range of cover feeders for both the Ratio and Publica range of binders are also described.

Also featured is another new agency Kolbus UK have acquired.
WST have entered into a global marketing arrangement with Kolbus and as a consequence we have acquired the agency for the Doctor range of palletisers. These well known machines are the only layer palletisers on the market specifically designed for use in the graphic arts industry.

Between this new agency and the CMC agency highlighted in the last newsletter, Kolbus UK can now offer complete turnkey solutions for all varieties of binding line projects.

Finally, Mike Chugg, one of Kolbus UK's long standing employees is profiled as he looks forward to his retirement later this year. He has already purchased his caravan for long trips to Spain so those who live in the Bristol area have been warned - Mike may be out practicing.

Doctor Palletisers added to the Kolbus UK product range

WST Systemtechnik GmbH are situated in Espelkamp, conveniently close to the Rahden HQ of Kolbus GmbH.

This specialist manufacturer has been producing equipment for the graphic arts industry since 1975, and specifically the Doctor range of palletisers since 1984. The current range was first launched at DRUPA 2000 and has been continuously developed ever since.

There are three palletisers in the range - 20, 30 and 50 per minute models. The 20 and 30 machines are both layer palletisers, making them the fastest style on the market and are especially suited to loose piles of products. In each case the piles are raised on a paternoster to the correct height to load the pallet. On the faster model the pile is rotated as it is being lifted on the paternoster which means that the operation is carried out within the cycle time of the machine. The 20 per minute model has the product rotation with a clamp on the machine infeed. The 50 per minute model varies in that it is specifically designed for individual books.

Coupled with the range of inserters, mailing lines and shrink wrappers from CMC announced last issue, Kolbus UK are now able to offer complete one-stop bindery solutions.

Two new cover feeders
Stream feeder:

Developed from the well-known "Rodeo" cover feeder the new Kolbus SAL 410 stream cover feeder has been launched.

Suitable for use on all Publica binders plus the KM 472.A Ratiobinder, the cover feeder can also be retrofitted to most recent Publica and Ratiobinders. The feeder is capable of running four, six and eight page covers with no special attachments. Cover paper weights from 80 up to 400 gsm can be accommodated and covers with tipped on CDs on one side can also be processed.

Because the design of the entire system has been simplified - less suckers and only two delivery rollers - change-over times have been dramatically shortened. Clear and easy to read operator controls and improved access to clear faults in the alignment and transport area further aid simple operation of the feeder.

Non-stop pile cover feeder:

Designated the NA 400 this new feeder is suitable for use with Ratiobinders 472.A and 410.B. The feeder can run four, six and eight page covers without special attachments and process tipped on CDs on cover weights from 80 to 135gsm.

Using the separation system developed so successfully for the ZU 840 gatherer the NA 400 feeder features particularly quick make ready, aided by the simple +/- adjustment buttons.

CMC Bundle shrink wrapping machines

There are two machines in the CMC range - the FA 600BTand the faster FAV 600.

The FA 600BT is ideal for use with the Kolbus Ratiobinder, it will wrap one, two or four base parcels and, like its faster stable mate, can be fitted with side sealers if required.

Ideal for the magazine printer, teamed up with the Publica binder, is the 45 products per minute FAV 600. With the sealing bar moving at the same speed as continuous belts it will shrinkwrap in-line one base products at full production speed.

People Profile: Mike Chugg

After a working lifetime in the graphic arts industry, and 22 years with the company, Mike Chugg is now retirement bound.

Born in Woolacombe, to parents who ran a local hotel, he decided not to follow in their footsteps and instead started his working life in the printing industry. Mike sat the (then) BFMP entrance examination "because my school mates told me printers were well paid" he quips. He was offered a job as a machine minder, but they spotted that he was colour blind, so he became an apprentice compositor with West Country based Arrowsmiths.

Mike progressed within print companies in positions as production, works and technical manager until he crossed to machine sales and was taken on in 1981 by Gordon Robson, then MD of Schuler Sales & Service, as their sales manager. At that time Mike was the whole sales force and covered the complete British Isles. As the Kolbus product range developed, and particularly the new perfect binders brought trade finishers into the customer base, he took on responsibility specifically for the south and east of England.

Now his retirement plans include avoiding cold British winters by decamping with wife Wendy, in their recently acquired caravan, to sunny Spain. And lest you think the UK has seen the last of him, they intend spending summers touring the English countryside in their old MG, when not visiting any of their extensive family, which includes seven grandchildren.
