Winter 2004

Robert Flather, M.D. Kolbus UK Ltd

Welcome to the Winter edition of the Kolbus UK Newsletter.

In this issue we profile the RollStream binder, a 20,000 per hour perfect binder launched at DRUPA as a collaboration project with Ferag.  This machine was a sensation on it’s debut and for many was the highlight of the finishing equipment on display at the show.

Also featured are two new machines from Kolbus.  There has been a trend in recent years for more “paperbacks with flaps” to be specified by book publishers with subsequent bottleneck issues for binders.  In response Kolbus now launch the Cermi front edge trimmer which utilises Kolbus proven trimming technology and can be used either in line or off line.

Also launched is a mailing line from Kolbus for high speed collating and bagging of complex products.

On the back page we discuss the end of an era for a family of Kolbus casemakers as the industry stalwart, the DA 36/DAS is finally discontinued.  Many customers learnt their craft on these machines so it is appropriate to mark their parting.  Long serving Kolbus UK electrician Tony Wills is also profiled.

The Kolbus UK team look forward to being of service to you in the future.

Kolbus Mailing Line

Kolbus have linked a ZU 841 vacuum gatherer to the individual shrink wrapper of a mailing line to create a heavy duty high speed mailing line.  The benefit of this is that the proven flexibility and reliability of this gatherer to feed difficult products can be exploited to realise a productive mailer.  Lines will be designed and built according to a customers individual requirements so if you have a demand for product collation and bagging for mailing or distribution, why not give us a call?

Kolbus - Ferag
Rollstream Binder

The RollStream binder utilises the Ferag gathering technology used for collating inserts and gathers the sections together at 90o to the binder.  The jet feeders, rated at 40,000 per hour can be fed by either a roll or a bundle feeder, lay the separated section down as a shingle with one stream on top of another.  All the spines are aligned so that the collated sections can easily be separated from the mat.  The sections are then registered in the cross rotary sequential feeder before being fired into the binder.  The binder has a reduced clamp pitch of 320 mm, making it ideal for A4 products but this also enables the binder to run at a faster speed without increasing the linear chain speed.  After binding the product can be trimmed on the new uprated HD 152.P before passing on to the downstream machines.

A further collaboration with Ferag has resulted in the Ferag Rollsert product now being suitable for inserting perfect bound products.  With a top speed of 30,000 per hour there is now no constraint on running speed of these lines.

Development of these machines continues and we look forward to seeing the first installations in 2005.

Specification: KM 410D
Max size: 240mm x 320mm
Max thickness: 12mm
Max speed: 20,000 per hour

End of an Era for a Casemaking Legend

After 37 continuous years of production the curtain has finally fallen on the DA 36 family of casemakers.  The first double headed casemaker, the DA 36 was produced in 1967 and a total of 1,218 were produced until it’s withdrawal in 1995.  It’s large format brother the DAS introduced in 1976, however, remained in production despite falling demand until this year when the last, the 208th was produced.

Despite it’s long make readies, many of the machines remain in production due to their ability to handle a vast range of cloths and are looked back on with nostalgia by a generation of skilled casemaker craftsmen.  As with all discontinued machines, Kolbus will continue to provide support with spare parts and service.

People Profile: Tony Wills

From apprenticeship onwards
Tony Wills has always worked as an electrician, joining Kolbus UK (then Schuler Sales & Service) as an electrical engineer back in 1987. Since then he has been involved in machine installations, repairs and servicing right across the UK.

A born and bred Northamptonian Tony started life at Burton Latimer, served his apprenticeship in Kettering, and still lives only four miles from his original home town. That’s one of the main reasons he gives for having been a lifelong supporter of Kettering Town FC.
Before joining Kolbus Tony spent 10 years working on contract at Timsons of Kettering

which is where he reckons the ink really got into his blood. “I’ve seen so many changes in the industry over the years” says Tony, “but I still think my favourite machines to work on are the hard case lines. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a high quality case-bound book come off the end of a line”.

Tony reckons to clock up around 30,000 miles a year in the course of his work – but still enjoys motoring off with his touring caravan on holidays throughout the UK. But every year just before Christmas you’ll find Tony and his wife of nearly 40 years “Rockin’ all over the World” – well the NEC anyway. For the last eight years they have been going to see Status Quo – at their final, final, UK gig!
